d-you: the EUDI Wallet goes live on 2 January 2027 — what is in it for merchants

d-you is the name of the German EUDI Wallet: the federal digital ministry announced it on 9 September 2026, the launch date is 2 January 2027, and use is voluntary and free of charge. Around 40 partners are bringing their own applications, with age verification, legally binding contracts and banking named explicitly. The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe is a launch partner with ten applications.

What happened

The German implementation of the European identity wallet now has a name and a date. On 9 September 2026 the Bundesministerium für Digitales und Staatsmodernisierung (federal ministry for digital affairs and state modernisation) announced that the app is called d-you and will launch on 2 January 2027; use is voluntary and free of charge. Around 40 partners from business, academia and public administration are expected to enable their own applications through this ecosystem at launch. Age verification, legally binding contracts and account opening are named explicitly. One day later, on 10 September, the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe positioned itself as a launch partner: ten initial applications are to be available at launch, among them identification for current account and securities account openings as well as for corporate customer offerings, with further applications to follow during 2027. Joachim Schmalzl, member of the DSGV management board, names as the condition for success applications “that are genuinely needed”. What is still missing four months before launch are the public technical specifications: according to IT-Finanzmagazin, there is so far nothing solid on connecting to existing identification processes, on the eIDAS trust services or on the format of the wallet credentials.

Who it affects

Online merchants with age-restricted ranges — alcohol, tobacco, knives, 18-rated games, medicines, vaping accessories. Also every shop with account opening, instalment purchase, rental or subscription, meaning everywhere that an ID upload, video ident or Postident currently sits inside the order process. At the point of sale it affects merchants who so far handle age checks at the shelf or at the till by visual inspection. For payment service providers, payment network operators (Netzbetreiber) and till manufacturers, the wallet becomes a field that belongs on the product roadmap during 2027.

Assessment

The name is the smallest piece of news of the day, the date is the biggest. 2 January 2027 is a hard deadline, and the Sparkassen announcement shows how seriously the financial sector is taking it: anyone who declares themselves a launch partner the day after the name is announced has long since secured an internal budget. What is interesting for retail is one sentence in the Sparkassen release that is easily overlooked — the group wants to think digital identity and European payments with Wero together. That is exactly where the leverage sits. Identity and payment are the same point of friction in the checkout, and whoever handles both in a single step wins no data protection debate, but conversion.

Even so, the next few months call for calm rather than activism, for a very practical reason: there is nothing to integrate yet. Without published interfaces and credential formats, no shop operator and no payment provider can plan reliably; anyone receiving offers right now that promise a finished d-you integration should ask which specification it is supposed to be based on. The real preparatory work is a different one anyway: knowing where identification happens in your own order process today, what that costs per instance and how many customers drop out along the way. Anyone who has those three figures on the table in spring 2027 can decide in five minutes whether a wallet integration is worth it. Anyone who does not will be arguing about technology instead of money.

What to do now

  1. List every point in the order and sign-up process where an identity or an age is checked today — including the cost per check and the abandonment rate at exactly that step.
  2. Ask your shop, till and payment provider in writing whether d-you support is planned for 2027 and when a specification will be available. Answers without a date are a declaration of intent, not a roadmap.
  3. Review running contracts for video ident or age verification services for their term and notice period, before a cheaper alternative exists in 2027. No new multi-year commitments without an exit clause.
