Ingenico: 150 million euros in fresh capital, Apollo exits

Europe's largest terminal manufacturer is converting debt into equity, PIMCO leads the investor group, previous owner Apollo is leaving. What that means for merchants with Ingenico devices at the till.

What happened

Ingenico announced a capital restructuring on 17 August 2026. An investor group led by the bond house PIMCO is injecting 150 million euros, and part of the roughly 1.1 billion euros of debt is being converted into equity, reportedly around 400 million euros. Apollo Global Management, which had acquired Ingenico from Worldline in 2022, is exiting entirely. This followed a downgrade by Moody's in February, talks with creditors since April and an eleven per cent drop in turnover in 2025.

Who is affected

Ingenico terminals sit at a large share of tills in Germany and Austria, usually under the name of the payment network operator (Netzbetreiber): Desk/5000, Move/5000, the Lane series and, more recently, the AXIUM Android range. That means merchants who rent or have bought these devices, and the payment network operators who install them.

Assessment

For the merchant, nothing changes on the Monday after the news. The terminal keeps booking. The question is the next device generation. Ingenico has already published end-of-life dates for the Linux models Desk/3500 and Desk/5000; the future is Android SmartPOS. A manufacturer that has to clean up its balance sheet will prioritise development and support, and it will do so in favour of the new platform. Anyone renting an older device today should know how long their payment network operator guarantees security certification and replacement.

The second point concerns the payment network operators themselves. Hardware was never the differentiator; everyone installs the same three or four manufacturers. When one manufacturer wobbles, it shows who really commits to exchange and replacement devices in the contract and who merely collects the rent.

What to do now

  1. Read your rental contract to see whether an exchange service with a deadline is agreed, not just “support”.
  2. For any upcoming purchase, insist on PCI PTS 6.x or higher and on an Android platform.
  3. Have your payment network operator confirm in writing which device models it will continue to support over the next 24 months.
